5 Signs Your Lawn Needs Soil Repair—And What to Do About It

Let’s face it—your lawn may be green, but if it’s patchy, spongy, or just plain sad, it’s probably trying to tell you something.

You water, you mow, you might even throw down some fertilizer and cross your fingers. But here’s the dirt on grass health: if you’re not feeding the soil, you’re only doing half the job. That’s right. Healthy lawns start from the ground up—literally.

Welcome to the underground truth: Soil health is Lawn health.

Routine Lawn Care Activities

If your grass is throwing shade (and not the leafy kind), it might be time to bring in the fix: our Lawn Repair Mix—a triple-threat blend of topsoil, fine sand, and Purple Cow Compost that works magic from the root zone up.

5 Signs Your Lawn Needs Soil Repair

  1. Bare Patches That Won’t Bounce Back

If you’ve reseeded the same sad spots over and over, but nothing takes, it’s probably not your seed—it’s your soil. Compaction, poor structure, or dead organic matter can sabotage germination.

  1. Your Grass Looks Tired—Even When You Feed ItCommon Lawn Grass Problems

You fertilize, you water, but it still looks… meh. That’s because fertilizer feeds the grass—but your soil might be starving. Think of it like giving vitamins to a plant in a broken pot.

  1. Spongy, Soft, or Uneven Ground

If your lawn feels like a bumpy trampoline, you might have poor drainage or inconsistent soil structure. That’s a sign it’s time to level and amend the soil.

  1. Water Runs Off Instead of Soaking In

Your lawn might be hydrophobic (no joke). When soil lacks proper structure or organic matter, water can’t penetrate—it just slides off, leaving roots thirsty.

  1. You’re Seeing More Weeds Than Grass

Weeds love weak soil. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil gives your grass the competitive edge it needs to push out pesky invaders.

The Fix? Our DIY-Friendly Lawn Repair Mix

At Tim Wallace Soil Mix Supply, we designed our Lawn Repair Mix for everyday homeowners who are ready to roll up their sleeves and give their grass what it really needs.

Here’s what’s inside (and why it works wonders):2 Yards of Delivered Lawn Repair Mix

  1. Topsoil – The Foundation

Rich, screened topsoil creates the ideal base layer. It holds moisture, provides minerals, and gives grass seed a firm place to anchor. Our topsoil is clean, fluffy, and free of junk—because your lawn deserves better than a dirt sandwich.

  1. Fine Sand – The Secret Sauce for Structure

Sand helps with leveling uneven areas, improves drainage, and breaks up clay-heavy soils (which we’ve got plenty of here in Illinois). It also prevents future compaction, so roots can stretch out and breathe.

  1. Purple Cow Classic Compost – The Organic Powerhouse

This isn’t your average compost. Purple Cow is teeming with beneficial microbes, organic matter, and nutrients that feed the soil—and then the grass. It boosts root development, improves nutrient uptake, and helps your lawn bounce back fast. It’s also OMRI Listed as suitable for organic gardening and is guaranteed to be weed seed, manure and pathogen free.

Together, these three ingredients repair, rebuild, and revive even the most tired turf.

Yes, You Can DIY This!

No need for fancy lawn services or high-end equipment. This is a weekend warrior project—all you need is a shovel, rake, wheelbarrow (or cart), and some ambition. Spread a ½ – 1 inch layer of Lawn Repair Mix over the affected area, rake it in lightly, and either over seed or let the existing grass grow through. Before and After Lawn Repair Mix Project

We walk you through, step-by-step, exactly how to do it, with just a touch of humor and a lot of lawn wisdom.

How Much Will I Need?

First, measure the area of your yard that you’re going to repair. Length x’s Width = Square Feet. Our easy Rule of Thumb is that: For every 1,000 square feet of lawn, you’ll need 1.5 cubic yards of Lawn Repair Mix. This provides you with  a final depth of 1/2″ across your lawn.
